Sustainability Showdown: A green plastics quiz

What does a John Deere combine have in common with the soybeans it might harvest? Why are DVDs actually good for the planet? When does a Jet Ski earn points for sustainability? What makes a red Alfa Romeo so green? And what do plastics have to do with any of it?

You’ll get answers to all of that and more when Industrial Designers and Design Engineers face off in a green plastics quiz. This presentation is positioned first to establish a shared vocabulary for concepts of sustainable design that come up again and again as the program progresses. In true game show fashion, volunteer “contestants” compete for points and prizes by displaying their knowledge of sustainability as applied to plastics. Categories cut a wide swath through basic definitions, fundamental requirements for sustainable development, environmental industry acronyms and some of the newest thinking about green chemistry. Questions squarely address “hot topics,” including emissions, global environmental standards and where plastics fit in the advance toward renewable resources. Images of cutting-edge processes and the latest materials applications accompany the rapid-fire responses and illustrate how today’s plastics can support and inspire sustainable design. Competitive and fast-paced, this presentation encourages the audience to be part of the fun and part of the solution to what may be the most important topic of our time — designing a sustainable future.
